This is a painting of African American cowboy Jesse Stahl. He was a rodeo star, headlining shows across the West. He’d wow crowds with his courageous, often death defying stunts, popularizing the term “suicide rides” when he rode. In this particular painting he is riding on Glass Eye, a horse that would buck aggressively, twisting its body 180 degrees in midair. Stahl handled it though, like he did everything, with a smile on his face.
